What is balanced pain management?

It’s important to know a pain management center’s philosophy. PMG’s model of balanced pain management is built on these key points:
- Consultative The center focuses on the patient’s acute or chronic pain diagnosis. It acts as a consultative service and remains in contact with the patient’s primary care physician.
- Hospital-based center A hospital-based center ensures the best patient experience by providing accessible, high quality care. Often located on or near the hospital campus, the center uses hospital lab, imaging, therapy and other ancillary services. Integration with the hospital system’s resources and records ensures patient care isn’t duplicated.
- Qualified pain specialist The center’s board certified and fellowship trained pain management physician assumes primary care for the pain diagnosis. The physician coordinates the patient’s treatment program aiming to restore daily activities.
- Multi-modal approach After diagnosing the patient’s pain, the physician creates a tailored care plan. He or she incorporates a combination of minimally invasive interventional procedures, medication management and other hospital-based ancillary services like physical therapy.
- Patient accountability The patient and physician establish a relationship of accountability. The patient is equipped to be responsible and accountable for their care by receiving prescribed opioids from one physician, filling prescribed opioids at one pharmacy, urine drug screens, random pill counts and appropriate behavior in the clinic.
